Contemporary Sri Lankan Artist

Nisansala Karunaratne Rajapaksa

She is an intuitive artist and experimenter in her creative endeavors. She is inspired by nature and the nuances of color, which is reflected in her work. Nisansala has not framed herself to a particular stylistic formula; her work is vivid and she carries on with new expressions and explorations of colors, forms, and texture.

Nisansala is well-known Sri Lankan artist resident in Sri Lanka. Her training as a graphic designer and fine arts photographer at the California State University at San Jose, qualifying with a BFA, and also a master’s from the University of Kalaniya in Buddhist studies helps her delve into different traditions amalgamating her Asian roots to blend space and time to create a dynamic perspective of art while also deriving the western worldview of realism and accuracy.

She has done many solo exhibitions and her paintings are held in collections in the US, Germany, Japan, Australia, Korea, China and in the personal collection of Padmanabadasa Uttarananda Maharaja of Travancore, India — is a recognition of the work and an endorsement for the unique style she has developed.

“Art is a symphony of expressions. Her art has developed into a combination of modern techniques and Sri Lankan tradition, meticulously held together by her unique sense of color and perspective that spans Eastern and Western artistic conventions”.
Brush Strokes of Beauty

Breif on her talent

Using color pigments – either watercolour on paper or oil on canvas or natural pigments drawn from trees, flowers and stone – Nisansala creates works of art that are luminous and unforgettable. Her deft ability with watercolour & oil mediums, which take many years of practice to master in order to work without weighing down the image or over crafting it, displays a talent that is rare in Sri Lanka.

Art is her life

Explorations

Dabbling in a blend has helped Nisansala carry new expressions and explorations of colours, forms, and texture. Her enquiring temperament is evident in the painting done with natural pigments. The rich terracotta of earthy tones depicts a traditional motif of Sri Lankan origin. Emulating the ancestors of temple art.
